Roskosmos showed a photo of giant tornadoes on Mars
Representatives of the state corporation "Roscosmos" showed giant tornadoes on Mars. The corresponding photos appeared on Saturday, February 27, on the official website of the company.
Roscosmos demonstrated two images taken with a difference of 45 seconds on February 27, 2019, by the CaSSIS camera onboard the Trace Gas Orbiter of the Russian-European ExoMars-2016 mission. The footage shows two moving dust vortices on the surface of Mars.
"Bright spots move along the bottom of a 70-kilometer crater in the southern hemisphere of Mars, leaving behind a dark band, " Roscosmos representatives explained. — The moving shadows of two dust columns are also visible. The vortex in the left part of the frame moves at a speed of about 4 meters per second, the right vortex-at a speed of 8 meters per second."
Martian tornadoes form in the same way as on Earth. When the surface becomes hotter than the air above it, the hot air flows move in the cooler and denser air, creating an upward current. In this case, the cold air descends and creates a vertical circulation. As a result of a horizontal gust of wind, this stream spins and, having gained sufficient speed, draws in dust and carries it over the surface.
The company emphasizes that the study of tornadoes on Mars is extremely important in order to understand how they could affect the climate on the planet over time.
Earlier, Roscosmos published a color photo of a small Martian crater. According to the information on the state corporation's website, the image was taken on October 19, 2020, by the CaSSIS camera installed onboard the Trace Gas Orbiter.
